Project Overview

Distribution of food items, hygiene kits and jerry cans.

Project Background

In February 2005 Pakistan was hit by heavy rain and snow storms. For many parts of the country it was the heaviest fall witnessed in seven years. In Balochistan the Shadikaur Dam burst its banks. The rain also washed away several bridges and part of a main road linking Pakistan’s Southern coast to the main cities. Agricultural fields in parts of Awaran, Lasbela and Ketch districts were submerged under rain and flood water.

Thirty-three people died as a result of the storms. Seven people were left missing and 650 families were displaced after their homes were destroyed. One hundred and sixty nine homes were badly damaged. The affected populations were at high risk of diarrhoea and malaria and other water born diseases due to a lack of safe and clean drinking water. Ninety percent of the previous irrigation schemes were washed away, four markets were destroyed and an estimated 12,000 acres of crops and 3,000 acres of orchard land were damaged. Access to basic health care facilities was extremely limited.

Project Objectives:

To provide relief to those affected by the flood..

Project Activities:

  • Distributing quilts and kitchen sets.
  • How Islamic Relief Helps

Islamic Relief is an international aid agency that works in over 25 countries worldwide.

Our work covers emergency preparedness, full-scale disaster response, rehabilitation and long-term development projects.

Over the years IR has provided communities with public services, such as water and education. We have now moved towards a ‘rights-based approach’, helping communities to become self-sufficient and encouraging them to expect their governments to provide adequate public services.

IR works in partnership with communities, aid agencies, local organisations and governments.
