Islamic Relief (IR) Iraq has signed a significant UN funding agreement, enabling the organisation to offer continued assistance to refugees in central Iraq.

The agreement was signed with the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR on January 22 2009 and will provide IR with funds to be used for projects with refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and returnees in the region.

"We are confident that the agreed upon work and duties to UNHCR will be met to make this project a success, Insha’Allah," said IR Iraq’s Dr Salah Daak.

"Through our hard work and clear conscience we are improving the lives of large numbers of needy people in Iraq, and that is a great achievement," Daak added.

The proposal will offer food, health and water assistance, help with domestic needs such as hygiene kits, nappies and subsistence and travel allowances, community services, educational support and shelter rehabilitation.

The agreement is one of several significant UNHCR funding arrangements secured by IR Iraq in the past few years and highlights the vital work the organisation has been carrying out since it first began working in the country in 1996.
